Published in 1946 for an audience of affluent, book-buying families in Seoul, Grapes and Beads realistically describes the daily lives of children in the poorer countryside with affection and respect. These interlocking stories feature a neighborhood group of young girls and boys, and include traditional Korean gender roles, foodways, games, and clothing. In “Courage,” author Hyŏn Tŏk shows how social factors shape a child’s imagination: these children play soldiers because their country is occupied by the Japanese military. Interestingly, a little girl, Young-yi, here marches like a soldier with the boys. The conflict between Giddong and No-ma reflects economic inequality as well as Giddong’s personal resilience. This story features distinctive traditional Korean clothing. “Squirt Gun” also examines conflict between Giddong and No-ma.

용기 골목 안에서 조그만 군대가 교련을 합니다. 노마 영이 똘똘이 는 병정입니다. 모두 어깨에다 막대기 총을 메고, 눈을 똑바루 기 착을하고 섰습니다. 지금 대장의 입에서 지령이 네리기를 기다립 니다. 대장은 기동입니다. 기동이는 대장이니까 대장된 온갖 의 용을 갖추었습니다. 첫째 노마 영이 똘똘이가 때묻은 바지 저고 리를 입었는데, 기동이는 양복을 입었습니다. 그리고 학생 모자 를 썼습니다. 모자가 대장 모자가 아닌것은 좀 섭섭한 일이지만 허리에 찬 칼은 막대기나 그런것이 아닙니다. 정말 쇠로 만든 대 장칼입니다. 기동이 아버지가 기동이를 위해 작난감 가가에서 사 온 번쩍번쩍하는 칼입니다. 기동이는 이 대장칼 하나만으로 대장 될 자격이 넉넉합니다. 그리고 노마 영이 똘똘이는 기동이가 이 대장 칼을 가진 하나만으로 넉넉히 대장으로 인정할수 있습니다. “앞으로 갓” 하고 대장은 큰 소리로 호령을 네리고 앞을 서서 떠납니다. 뒤를 병정이 딸습니다. 모두 입으로 따따따, 따따따 나팔 부는 소리를 내고, 그 소리에 발을 맞추어 갑니다. 골목을 나왔습니다. 큰 행길입니다. 오고 가는 많은 사람 가운 데에도 군대는 조금도 문란해지는 일이 없이 행진합니다. 따따따, 따따따 대장은 앞을 서 가고 병정은 그 뒤를 딸습니다. 병정은 대장 가는대로 가고 대장은 자기 가고싶은대로 갑니다. 자기 가고싶은대로 대장은 병정을 이끌고 우물앞을 왔습니다. 그 리고 우물 두던을 서너바퀴 돌다가 넓은 마당으로 갔습니다. 여 기서도 대장은 자기 가고싶은대로 넓은 마당을 빙빙 돕니다. 그 대로 병정은 대장을 따라 빙빙 돌지 않을수 없습니다.
마침내 노마도 대장이 되어 병정을 이끌고 자기 마음대로 가고 싶었습니다. 그러나 대장칼하고 대장 모자가 ㅇ벗고는 할수 없습니 다. 허지만 대장될 자격을 다만 칼이나 모자같은것을 가진 그걸 로만 정하는것은 대단 불공평한 일입니다. 그것 이상의 무슨 남 하지 못하는 용감한 일을한 사람이, 대장이 돼야 옳습니다. 그래 서 노마는 이런 제의를 하였습니다. “이번부턴 누구든지 검정 판장집 대문을 한번 두들기고 오는 사람이 대장이 되기로 하자” 그것은 매우 용기가 드는 일입니다. 검정 판장한 집은 사나운 개가 있어 근처만 가도 짖고 내닫습니다. 하지만 이만한 용기도 없는 사람을 대장으로 섬길수는 더욱 없는 일입니다. 마침내 기동이 노마 영이 똘똘이는 그 개가 있는 검정 판장한 집을 향해갔습니다. 그집 대문 가까이 이르자 여전히 개가 짖고 내딛습니다. 대문 안에서 개구녁으로 머리를 내놓고 짖습니다. 아주 무섭습니다. 그러나 이런것쯤은 무서워하고는 어떻게 대장 이 됩니까. 그래서 노마는 기동이 영이 똘똘이가 무서워서 벌벌 떨고 가지못하는데도 더벅더벅 앞으로 나가 그집 대문을 한번 탕 때리고 돌아왔습니다. 이만하면 노마는 때 묻은 바지 저고리를 입었어도 대장될 자격 이 넉넉합니다.
Translation
In the alley, children are playing. No-ma, Young-yi, and Ddol-ddol are soldiers. They stand up straight at attention with stick guns on their shoulders and their eyes wide open. They wait for the general, Giddong, to give orders.
Giddong shines with the power of a general, exuding command presence with every fiber of his being. No-ma, Young-yi, and Ddol-ddol wear dirty pants and jeogori [a traditional Korean shirt] while Giddong wears a fancy Western suit and a student cap.
Although it’s too bad that his cap isn’t a general's hat, the sword at his waist is no shoddy stick-like thing. It's the one and only real iron sword in the group, a shiny sword that his father bought for him at a toy store.
Giddong is qualified to be a leader just because of this sword. No-ma, Young-yi, and
Ddol-ddol fully accept Gidong as the leader just because of this sword.
"March forward!"
The general shouts and leads the way. The soldiers follow. Everyone makes the sound of trumpets with their mouth and marches in step with the sound. Tatata-tatata!
After the alley, they are in a wide street. Even among the many people who come and go, the army advances with solid alignment. Quick-time, double-time, following the trumpet sound, the soldiers follow as the general goes wherever he pleases. Tatata-tatata!
As he pleases, the general leads the soldiers to the well. And they march around the well three or four times and reach a wide yard. Here, too, the general spins around the large yard as he pleases. And the soldiers can't help but spin around with the general.
No-ma also wants to become a general and lead soldiers. But he can't. He doesn't have a shiny sword and a general’s cap.
But it's very unfair to qualify as a leader only because you have a sword or a cap or something like that, No-ma thinks. He thinks a leader should be a ‘valiant soul’, who can do things that others cannot do.
So, he makes this dare:
"From now on, the person who hits the black shack's gate will be the leader!"
That would be a very courageous action. The black shack has a fierce dog that barks and runs around everywhere. But it is impossible to serve well as your leader a man who doesn’t have courage.
Finally, the army goes towards the black shack where the dog is. As they approach the gate, the dog barks, and they step forward. It barks and runs around behind the gate, then barks through a hole in the gate.
No-ma is surely scared, but no one can be acknowledged as a leader if he gives in to fear of such things.
No-ma steps forward slowly and then knocks on the gate of the shack strongly once, even though
Ddol-ddol, Young-yi, and Giddong are shaking because they’re too scared and can't go forward.
No-ma’s courage means he is well-qualified to be a leader even in his dirty pants and jeogori.
