Sympathy

동정 영이집 문지방에 파랑치마 영이가 혼자서 아주 쓸쓸한 얼굴을 하고 않었습니다. 그렇게 고개를 기우듬히 한손으로 턱을 고이고 비탈 아래 먼길을 바라봅니다. 어머니가 개피떡, 송편 기득히 광 주리에 담아 머리에 이고 비탈아래 그 길로 사라지고는 해가 저 무도록 돌아오시지를 않습니다. 아마 어머니는 개피떡, 송편, 그 수효만큼 이집 저집 달려다니시느라고 아무 정신 없으신게지요. 그리고 영이가 집에서 혼자 기다리고 있는것은 까맣게 잊으신게 지요. 영이는 아주 쓸쓸한 얼골로 비탈 아래 먼길을 바라봅니다. 노랑치마 점순이가 왔습니다. 그리고 영이집 문지방에 그런 얼 굴을 하고 앉았는 영이를 보고 이상해 묻습니다. “영이 너 왜 그러고 앉았니” 그리고 노랑치마 점순이는 파랑치마 영이 옆에 앉아, 영이의 사 정을 듣고는, 영이처럼 아주 쓸쓸한 얼굴은 합니다. 점순이 자기 마음처럼 점순이는 영이마음이 알아진 까닭입니다. 아마 영이 어 머니는 아침에 한광우리 가득히 담아 머리에 이고 나간 그 개피 떡 송편 수효만큼 이집 저집 다니시느라고 아무 정신 없으신게지 요. 그리고 영어가 집에서 혼자 기다리고 있을것은 까맣게 잊으 신게지요. 그래서 점순이는 자기도 가치 아주 쓸쓸한 얼굴로 고 개를 기우듬히 한손으로 턱을 고이고, 비탈아래 먼길을 바라봅니 다. 다홍치마 숙정이가 왔습니다. 그리고 영이집 문지방에 그런 얼 굴을 하고 앉았는 영이하고 점순이를 보고 이상해서 묻습니다. “너이들 왜 그러고 앉았니” 그리고 다홍치마 숙정이는 파랑치마 영이 옆에 앉아 영이의 사

정을 듣고는 영이처럼 아주 쓸쓸한 얼굴을 합니다. 숙정이 자기 처럼 숙정이는 영이 마음이 알아진 까닭입니다. 아마 영이 어머 니는 아침에 한광우리 가득히 담아 머리에 이고 나간 그 개피떡 송편 수효만큼 그만큼 이집 저집 다니시느라고 아무 정신 없으신 게지요. 그리고 영이가 집에서 혼자 기다리고 있을것은 까맣게 읹으신게지요. 그래서 숙정이는 자기도 가치 고개를 기우뜸히 한 손으로 턱을 괴고 비탈 아래 먼길을 바라봅니다. 해가 저물고 바람이 봅니다. 그래도 영이집 문지방에는 다홍치 마 파랑치마 노랑치마 나란히 세소녀가 앉아, 아주 쓸쓸한 얼굴 로 고개를 기우듬히 턱을 괴고 비탈아래 먼 길을 바라봅니다.

On the threshold of Yeong-yi’s house, Yeong, wearing a blue skirt, sits alone with a
very lonely face.
 
She leans her chin on one hand and looks at the long road under the slope.
 
Mother disappeared down the slope with gaepi-tteok [rice-cake filled with bean jam] and songpyeon [half-moon-shaped rice cake] in a basket carried on her head, and she won’t return home until the end of the day.
 
Perhaps mother is busy selling gaepi-tteok and songpyeon as she goes around different houses.
 
And she completely forgot that her daughter, Yeong-yi, is waiting at home alone.
 
Yeong-yi has a very lonely face and looks down the slope.
 
JeomSoon, who is wearing a yellow skirt, comes to Yeong-yi.
 
And when Jeomsoon sees Yeong-yi sitting on the threshold of her house with a lonely face, she thinks Young-yi looks strange, so she asks her, "Yeong-yi, why do you sit like that?"
 
And Jeomsoon, who is wearing a yellow skirt, sits next to Yeong-yi, who is wearing a blue skirt.  She listens to Yeong-yi’s situation and makes a very lonely face like Yeong-yi.
 
The reason why Jeomsoon makes such a lonely face is that she recognizes Yeong's heart.
 
Jeomsoon thinks that perhaps Yeong-yi's mother is busy going from house to house, as many as the number of gaepi-tteok and songpyeon she carried on her head in the morning.
 
And Yeong-yi's mother completely forgot that Yeong-yi would be waiting at home alone.
 
So, Jeomsoon also leans her chin on one hand, and looks at the long road under the slope.
 
Sook-Jung, who is wearing a scarlet skirt, comes to Yeong-yi and Jeomsoon.
 
And when SookJung sees Yeong-yi and Jeomsoon sitting on the threshold of Yeong-
yi's house with a lonely face, she thinks Yeong-yi and Jeomsoon look strange, so she
asks them, "Why do you guys sit like that?"
 
Then SookJung makes such a lonely face because she recognizes Yeong's heart.

So, SookJung also leans her chin on one hand, and looks at the long road under the slope.
 
The sun is setting and the wind is blowing.
 
Still, three girls wearing scarlet skirts, blue skirts, and yellow skirts sit side by side on the threshold of Yeong-yi’s house, leaning their heads on their hands, with very lonely faces, looking down the slope.
