UM Museum of Anthropological Archaeology Image Database
The UM Museum of Anthropological Archaeology Image Database is a digital database of images related to archaeological practices that have been compiled by the University of Michigan museum. All kinds of things have been photographed and placed on the website, including experimental archaeological experiments, such as the creation of clay bowls. The website also includes photographs and images of excavations, personal collections, reference books and magazines, as well as images of artifacts in the University of Michigan’s museum. In addition to images, the website also hosts descriptions of things in collections (be that photos or artifacts) for those things that are not available to be viewed online. This project was supported by the NEH, as well as the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Art Information Technology Committee.University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Art Information Technology Committee
What makes this site useful is its open accessibility to see the results of archaeological digs and excavations. Not all students will have the opportunity to go into the field early in their career, but may what to better understand the process and results of actual fieldwork. You are able to sort by geographical area of focus, including by country, as well as by time period and culture, meaning that students and the general population in general will have the chance to view archaeological works in an area that interests them.
This website is useful in the classroom as a way for teachers to not only show archaeological works that may be relevant in content discussions (of either history or of archaeology), as well as relevant for those interested in a history of how archaeology has been practiced.
